Heather's bathroom received an incredible makeover this year, turning the old bathroom into a bright, fresh space in her income property.  Simple ceramic wall tile, Fibrefloor sheet flooring, and a custom vanity all brought the room together to make the most out of the space available.

Project: Kitchen Backsplash
Material: Irregular glass mosaic
Timeline: 2 days

While most backsplashes can be completed within one day, this job required two due to extensive demolition and patching of drywall when replacing the original backsplash.  We lowered the original height of the backsplash in order to make it line up with the bottom of the upper cabinets.  The new black/white/grey tile brings a more modern, clean look to the kitchen, and compliments the granite countertop.

Project: Washroom Renovation and Bathroom Construction
Timeline: 3 weeks

The Smiths Falls and District Centre for Youth (SFDCY) building is often traveled by without being noticed, located in a quiet section of Main Street West.  When we were approached to quote the centre's bathroom renovation project, their existing washroom was dated, unwelcoming and run down.  A vanity with a missing door sat in a room with dim lighting and a window that didn't function.

SFDCY serves over 200 youth in Smiths Falls, with 30+ dropping in on a daily basis, and plays a huge role in the positive lifestyle choices of local youth.  From sexual education to cooking, social skills to career building, the centre is a safe place where youth can come with issues and discuss intimidating topics with a staff that they trust.

Through securing a grant from Home Depot's Orange Door project, SFDCY was able to cover the majority of the funds required for a bathroom renovation project.  Working with their requirements, we met their budget and donated all other time/materials required beyond that amount.  Understanding the value of an organization like SFDCY, what they require in a facility and how many youth they directly impact, Geoff and I were incredibly excited to take on their project.  From design to completion, every aspect was considered and no detail overlooked.  The project required one room be demolished, and two rooms be constructed - one wheelchair accessible washroom, and one bathroom/laundry room.

Over the span of two and a half weeks, we performed the demolition, installed all new rough plumbing, spray foam insulation, LED pot lights, and enough ceramic tile to keep the space incredibly easy to clean.   Geoff's creativity inspired a job/activity bulletin board, which is located near the entrance door, on an exterior wall of the bathroom.  A vibrant orange accent tile was selected as it is known as a colour associated with social behaviours, while bringing energy and warmth to one of the centre's main areas.

SFDCY does incredible work in the community, and the staff take an individual interest in each of the youth.  To help with the amazing programming and support, visit their website or donate here.

Project: Kitchen Backsplash
Material: 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" white backsplash tile
Timeline: 7 hours

This kitchen backsplash project was completed in a single day with the use of a mastic adhesive, 4 x 4 arctic white backsplash tile, and unsanded bright white grout.  The tile wrapped the entire span of the kitchen area, and covered the entire wall behind the fridge.  A subway tile provides a traditional, clean look while being incredibly easy to maintain.

Virgil and Mirela replaced their old wood burning fireplace with a new Pacific Energy unit from Friendly Fires in Carleton Place.

The new unit required 48" of non-combustable material above the door, so it was decided that we would carry the tile to the ceiling.  The tile is Must Brown, supplied by Olympia Tile in Ottawa.  A custom pine trim was created and stained for a 'distressed' look to compliment the character of the tile. The tile on the base of the surround is trimmed with Schluter's RONDEC edging, making a safer edge (no sharp corners) along the perimeter of the base.

The base tile is installed over the existing base, with a Flextile adhesive designed to install tile over tile.  A safe, functional and attractive unit is the end result of this complete overhaul.
